HOW TO REDUCE WASTE.jpg)
There are many ways that we can reduce waster in and around our homes.
From the bigger things,
Like buying longer lasting and quality foods that last,
... through to the smallest
things, like avoiding heavily packaged products and saying no to plastic bags. Much of the waste we generate around the home ends up in landfill. In recent years Victorians have significantly reduced the amount of waste they send to landfill. But there is still more that can be done.
How can I reduce waste at home?
There are several practical steps you can take to reduce the amount of waste generated by your household. The three Rs; Reduce, Reuse and Recycle are easy to follow and good for the environment.
- Reduce the use of all resources so you have less waste to get rid of later on.
Send and read information electronically instead of printing it on paper, use renewable energy sources, such as solar power, or carry your own water bottle.
- Reuse your resources. This not only saves energy that might have been used to create the item in the first place, it also means you've saved sending something to landfill. Try using old newspapers for garden mulch and milk cartons for tree guards or using old plastic bags as bin liners.
- Recycle waste items so they can be reprocessed into either the same product or something different. Most councils offer kerbside recycled waste collection. All you have to do is sort your garbage to recycle cans, bottles, paper and glass.
What is the EPA doing to reduce waste?
Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Victoria's purpose is to protect, care for and improve our environment. EPA works in partnership with all levels of government, industry and the community to facilitate sustainable solutions for waste management.
How can I dispose of old chemicals?
You can call your local council and ask about regular household chemical collection days.
You can dispose of a range of household waste items:
- kitchen - aerosol cans (empty), insect sprays, floor care products, furniture polish, metal polish with solvent, oven cleaners
- bathroom - pharmaceuticals, bathroom cleaners
- workshop - paint strippers, cutting oil, solvent-based glues, oil-based paint, paint thinner, acetone, turpentine, varnish and wood preservative

The EPA offer the following hints for reducing wastes
- Use a reusable string or canvas bag instead of disposable plastic bags for shopping.
- Better still, take a shopping trolley or buggy with you and do without bags altogether.
- Choose products with less wrapping and packaging.
- Buy in bulk - many items can be bought more cheaply in large amounts.
- Buy appliances with high energy efficiency ratings.
- Put a "No Advertising Material" sticker on your letterbox.
Did you know?
A great way to reduce your 'ecological footprint' the amount of the earth's resources you use) is to grow your own food at home. You can grow a vegetable and herb garden, which will save you money and provide you with fresh food on demand.
