Recycling water for a greener future
It makes good sense to recycle our water wherever we can. Stormwater, greywater, rainwater and treated effluent are all alternative water supplies that, when treated, are suitable for a range of purposes in agriculture, horticulture, industry and in water-sensitive urban design. It can help keep public and recreational areas green.
Water recycling is an integral element in maintaining a sustainable water supply for Melbourne. Water recycling improves the reliability of our water supplies, frees up water for the environment and reduces the amount of treated effluent discharged into our bays and oceans.
The Victorian Government has set a target of 20 per cent water recycling by 2010. Further targets require 6200 million litres of recycled water substituting for drinking quality water by 2015 and increasing to 10,000 million litres by 2030.
Recycled water is fully treated and can be safely used for a variety of purposes, appropriate to its level of treatment. Class A and Class C recycled water from Melbourne Water's treatment plants is treated in accordance with Government environmental and health and safety guidelines.
Recycled water is different to greywater. Greywater includes water from the laundry and bathroom but does not include toilet waste. There are environmental guidelines for the use of greywater.
